ATHENS
Athens is the system which allows access to range of online resources through a single username and password. You may register on this site for your NHS Athens username and password. Once registered, log on via the MyAthens link to see a listing of all the resources to which you are entitled.
National Library for Health
The National Library for Health website is currently the main gateway to online healthcare resources for NHS staff but will be phased out and replaced by a new site known as NHS Evidence (see below).
Resources are grouped under seven headings: Evidence-based reviews; Guidance; Specialist collections (collected resources in topic areas); Books, journals and databases; Images; Patient information; and Drug information.
NHS Evidence
NHS Evidence has been developed by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to replace the National Library for Health as the main gateway to the evidence base in health and social care. Access to individual databases such as Medline and CINAHL, and to the specialist collections, e-journals and e-books is retained. Other sources can be searched via a Google-style single search box. Results may be refined according to area of interest, publication type etc.
My Journals
This area of the National Library for Health (Athens login required) allows you to see which journals you have access to electronically, or in print format from your local library.
The Cochrane Library
The Cochrane Library contains the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (the “gold standard” in evidence-based healthcare) and other databases of reviews and clinical trials.
TRIP database
The TRIP database allows you to search for high level evidence such as reviews, guidelines and core primary research across a range of online resources.
Intute
Intute provides access to quality assured information for education and research in the fields of medicine, nursing, midwifery and allied health.
Eastern Electronic Library for Health and Social Care (EEL)
EEL is the web site for NHS libraries in the East of England. It provides information on training, access to online resources and details of library services across the area.
