The 2010 Hayfever Season
Grass Pollen Monitoring at the Ipswich Hospital

National grass pollen counting will start this year on Monday 24 May 2010 and Ipswich will once again be gathering its own air samples to provide data for the local community and contribute to the national pollen forecasts from this date onwards.
Each weekday morning the local magnitude of grass pollen will be reported on the hospital website and intranet as HIGH MEDIUM OR LOW until the end of July. Weekend pollen is also counted if anyone is interested in knowing the level retrospectively, but these readings will not be posted on the web.

Researchers
At the end of this year we will have 6 years worth of data on grass pollen levels for our local region. If anyone is interested in using this data for research such as for hospital admission rates or in respiratory disease please contact Janette Bartle on ext.5145

Commence Hayfever Treatments in May
If you havent already started taking your hayfever remedies , I advise all hayfever sufferers to commence medication at the beginning of May. This will allow anti-inflammatory treatments to start working before the peak of the pollen season when grass pollen is in the air at a high levels and symptoms are expected by allergy sufferers. Continue your treatment throughout June and July to gain maximum benefit.

Tip
Vaseline in and around the nostrils and the eyelashes will reduce the amount of pollen on the mucous membranes and may help reduce your symptoms.
